Dear Colleagues,
in 2019, the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery SICCR promoted a project to produce Position Statements on the surgical management of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD).
The project has been designed and performed by a committee of collaborators, different for each topic, who conducted a literature review and summarized their findings in items with supporting text. Those were evaluated by all of the participants in each project using a “Delphi” method, meaning that all items and supporting texts were anonymously voted and commented on, revised accordingly, and re-assessed.
The resulting Items and supporting text were collated into three manuscripts, published in Techniques in Coloproctology, which assess, respectively, the surgical aspects of Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, and general principles and specific situations of such diseases.
The aim of the project was not to define strict guidelines, as alternative to already available guidance; rather, it offers a snapshot of the attitudes of Italian coloproctologists about the surgical treatment of IBD, in order to facilitate the implementation of agreed procedures in everyday practice, and to identify areas of disagreement or needing further elucidation.
